Planning to drive through the middle of Banff on Wednesday, November 11? Give yourself a bit of extra time. The Town says a rolling closure will be in effect while the Remembrance Day Parade travels its route.
The parade, memorial service and wreath laying at the cenotaph happen every November 11. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Col. Moore Branch 26 (Banff), the Canadian Armed Forces, Canadian Cadet Organizations, RCMP, Banff Protective Services, dignitaries and other representatives take part.
How the morning runs
Here is how the morning runs:
- 10:15 a.m.: The parade forms in the northbound lanes of Banff Avenue in front of the Banff Legion.
- 10:30 a.m.: It marches north on Banff Avenue, west on Elk Street, then north on Bighorn Street to Banff Elementary School for the memorial service in the gym.
- Approx. 11:45 a.m.: After the service, the parade comes back the same way, down the southbound lanes of Banff Avenue as far as Buffalo Street. It then forms up in the northbound lanes in front of the cenotaph outside the Legion.
Any member of the public can lay a wreath at the ceremony, after the registered organizations have gone first.
The closure moves with the parade, so streets reopen as it passes. For the full route map, check the Town of Banff's road closures page.
